The Value of a Lactation Consultation or Breast Pump
A lactation consultation or breast pump are important investments in the health and well-being of both mother and baby.  A lactation consultation or breast pump are important financial investments as well.  Costs of not breastfeeding include:
o  Costs of formula, bottles and teats (artificial nipples)
o  Additional healthcare costs for baby (including increased risk of hospitalization during the first year of life)
o  Additional healthcare costs for mother
o  Additional missed days of work for both parents due to illness in the child

The price of a lactation consultation is 4-6% of the cost of formula alone during the first year (estimated at $2000).  Of course, the costs of not breastfeeding are spread out over the course of the first year whereas a lactation consultation is paid in one lump sum, which can be difficult for new parents.  So here are a few ideas that may help:

o
Submit the consultation and breast pump rental fees to your insurance company.  All clients receive a Lactation Reciept which includes codes for submitting for insurance claims.  Sweet Pea provides each client with instructions on how to submit to their insurance provider in order to make the process simple and to maximize the chance for reimbursement.

o  Lactation consultations and breast pump purchase or rental are now tax deductable as medical expenses.  As such, they can be purchased through your Health Reimbursment Arrangements, (HRA), Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA).  (At this time, FSA debit cards cannot be processed by our provider.  However, the Lactation Receipt can be submitted for reimbursement.  We apologize for your inconvenience.)

o  Get your employer to pay.  Some companies participate in Workplace Lactation Programs in which the employer pays for lactation education and support, including lactation consultations and breast pump purchase or rental.  Contact us for more information regarding starting a Workplace Lactation Program in your (or your partner's) place of employment.

o  Use a credit card to help defer or spread out payment.

o  If you qualify for WIC services, request an IBCLC.  Although most breastfeeding helpers at WIC are Breastfeeding Peer Counselors, some local WIC offices do employ an IBCLC.  (If you have difficulty finding an IBCLC through WIC, contact Sweet Pea Breastfeeding Support for more information.)

If none of these options are helpful to you, I will work with you to find a fee that is manageable for you.

                                            Payment Options
Payments are due at time of service.  Payment may be made by cash, check, or credit card.   (Monthly or weekly renewals of breast pump rentals are automatically charged to a credit card.)
