What does a visit with an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant
(IBCLC) have to offer?
There are many people in our community that can help with you with breastfeeding - and many of them offer their services for free or at little cost. What makes a visit with an IBCLC different is that an IBCLC is the only professional or volunteer certified to deal with clinical breastfeeding issues. As such, the following practices can be offered within the scope of an IBCLC:
o take a thorough history of the mother, baby, and the breastfeeding relationship
o assess the mother's anatomy for any abnormalities
o assess the baby's mouth for any abnormalities
o assess the baby's sucking for any abnormalities
o observe breastfeeding and offer guidance as needed
o measure milk intake during breastfeeding
o offer support and accessories to make the use of a breast pump more effective and comfortable
o assist mother in the use of specialized breastfeeding tools
o communicate with other health care providers serving mother and baby
Other community breastfeeding helpers (La Leche League Leaders, WIC Peer Counselors, and Certified Lactation Counselors) are peer counselors that help mothers with normal breastfeeding questions and offer mothers ongoing community support for breastfeeding. See Resources section for contact information for these peer breastfeeding counselors.
